Teus is celebrating 50 years at Schreuders Sport!
A remarkable milestone, and something you rarely hear of these days. That’s why we’re putting Teus in the spotlight! While he isn't one for too much fuss, he gladly answered a few fun questions to mark this special anniversary.
Could you briefly share what kind of work you’ve done here over the years?
In the early days, it was mostly helping customers, loading and unloading, and riveting ice skates. Over the years that followed, my main focus shifted to handling returns, packing, and doing repairs.
Which special moments or memories will you truly never forget?
Number one on the list is my colleagues, I’ll never forget them. The winter seasons back in the day were also wonderful times. It was incredibly busy with customers coming to pick up their orders. The atmosphere was buzzing and the whole street would be packed with cars, what a time that was!
Another thing worth mentioning: our repair area used to be upstairs. It meant walking a long way around, and we couldn't install a staircase in a more practical spot. Eventually, I was given the chance to design the repair room we use today, and it was built just like that. That’s a great memory for me as well!
What have been the most memorable changes between your first day and today?
We used to write everything by hand: order slips, consignment notes, labels, and so on. Now everything is digitalized, and we work with systems like barcode scanners. It’s so much easier and faster.
What is the best piece of advice you would give to a new colleague today?
Just do your best!
50 years with one employer sounds like an eternity to younger generations. What is your 'secret' to staying with the same company for so long?
No doubt about it: my colleagues! You can always rely on them. We have a close-knit team and truly look out for one another.
Is there anything from the past that you miss or would like to bring back?
We used to hire a lot of holiday workers during the summer. That meant working with a lot of different people, which always brought fresh conversations. We no longer need summer temps, but it was great fun back then.
Which tool or habit from 50 years ago do you secretly miss the most (or not at all)?
What I definitely don’t miss is writing everything out by hand or on a typewriter. Things are so much easier now with modern computers and software.
Is there an item in your workspace that has been here as long as you have?
(Teus laughs.) Yes, my hand truck! It’s been here since the day I started. And the riveting machines are actually older than my time here! Two new riveting machines were added later on, but the old ones are still right there!
